“You can make a difference, one patient at a time,” said Kristi Weydert, Clinical Supervisor, Ophthalmology, after she and a dozen ophthalmology staff volunteered with Dr. Charles Ahn, Dr. Shantan Reddy and Dr. Scott Stoller to see patients from The DuPage Community Clinic on Saturday morning at the Downers Grove site. The group performed 132 eye examinations in just 3 ½ hours for uninsured patients with diabetes. Patients with diabetes are advised to have an annual eye exam to identify possible retinal changes that may be a complication of the disease. Without the care of our dedicated ophthalmology department most of these patients would not be able to have annual screenings. “It is such a rewarding experience,” Weydert stated, and other volunteers echoed. This is the third screening program the group has completed. The department plans to host another screening in April 2013.
The charity care program serving the DuPage Community Clinic is supported by the DuPage Medical Group Charitable Fund. For more information or to learn how you can participate, email firstname.lastname@example.org. Thanks to all who volunteer to make a difference.
